Vartal-16: Not Feeling Comfortable with Worldly Great Men

(In this incident, Pramukh Swami Maharaj explains the meaning of the word ‘mad’ (pride) as used by Shriji Maharaj.)

June 18, 1993. Sarangpur. Priyavrat Swami read on the topic of ‘Shriji Maharaj’s Personality’ based on the Vachanamrut. On that, Maharaj’s words about his state of equanimity were read: “If you seat us on a elephant or a donkey... we should remain happy...” based on Vachanamrut Gadhada I-74. I said, “How can one remain happy sitting on a donkey?”

Swamishri said, “If one believes it is God’s wish, then one can remain happy.” Then, he added, “One day, go sit on a donkey in Anand.”

I instantly said, “I would not sit on a donkey in any circumstance. What would others say?”

Swamishri said, “People can say what they want to. We just have to say ‘Swaminarayan Swaminarayan’ while sitting on the donkey. Only when something like this happens, whether they have reached an elevated state is realized.”

“God is omniscient. If we show him, everything is included. Why do we need to show others (if we have reached that state)?” I argued.

“Even so, for our own realizizarion that we have reached that state, we have to do it.”

Reading further, the word ‘pride (mad) in devotion’ were read. I asked, “Why did Maharaj use the word mad? We should not have mad.”

Swamishri replied, “In this context, mad means ecstasy. When one becomes ecstatic in devotion of God, one forgets everything else. Just as one who drinks alcohol becomes mad and forgets the world, one forgets the world when one becomes intoxicated with devotion of God.”

(પસ્તુત પ્રસંગમાં મહારાજે વાપરેલો શબ્દ ‘મદ’નો અર્થ કેવી રીતે સમજવનો તેનું નિરૂપણ પ્રમુખસ્વામી મહારાજ કરે છે.)

તા. ૧૮-૬-૯૩, સારંગપુર. પ્રિયવ્રત સ્વામીએ સ્વામીશ્રી સમક્ષ ‘વચનામૃત’ના આધારે ‘શ્રીજીમહારાજનું વ્યક્તિત્વ’ એ વિષય ઉપર મહારાજનાં સમત્વનાં વચનોની વાત કરી. “હાથીએ બેસાડે કે ગધેડે... રાજી રહે... પ્ર. ૭૪....” મેં પૂછ્યું, “ગધેડે બેસવામાં રાજી કેમ રહેવાય?”

સ્વામીશ્રી, “ભગવાનની ઇચ્છા માનીએ તો રહેવાય.” પછી કહે, “તમે એક દિવસ આણંદમાં જઈને ગધેડે બેસો.”

મેં તરત કહ્યું, “હું તો કોઈ સંજોગોમાં ના બેસું. લોકો કહે, ‘શું હશે?’”

સ્વામીશ્રી, “લોકોને જે બોલવું હોય એ બોલે. આપણે તો સ્વામિનારાયણ, સ્વામિનારાયણ કરતાં માળા લઈને બેસવું. ભજન કરવું. આવું થાય તો સ્થિતિ છે કે નહિ તેની ખબર પડે ને!”

“ભગવાન અંતર્યામી છે. એમણે બતાવ્યું એમાં બધું આવી ગયું. બહાર બતાવવાની જરૂર શી?” મેં દલીલ કરી.

“તો ય પ્રતીતિ માટે કરવું પડે ને!”

સ્વામીશ્રીને ગમ્મતમય સૂરમાં સમત્વની શીખનો રણકો હતો. આગળ ‘ભક્તિ’ના મદની વાત આવી.

મેં પૂછ્યું, “મહારાજે ‘મદ’ શા માટે કહ્યો? મદ તો કોઈ પ્રકારે રાખવો જ ન જોઈએ.”

સ્વામીશ્રી કહે, “મદ એટલે કેફ કહેવાય. ભક્તિનો કેફ ચડે એટલે બીજું ભૂલી જવાય. જેમ દારૂ પીને ગાંડો થાય ને બધું ભૂલી જાય એમ ભક્તિનો કેફ એવો ચઢે કે જગત ભૂલાઈ જાય.”

Pramukh Swami Maharaj celebrated Dev-Diwali on November 8, 1984, then he arrived in Dharmaj for a pārāyan. When reading Vachanamrut Vartal 16, the topic of miracles suddenly popped up. Regarding miracles, Swamishri said, “I do not have any power to perform miracles, so what miracle can I show? Others have such powers so they show miracles. Maharaj has not given us the power to perform miracles, so what can I show?”

Swamishri concealed his true power and exhibited human traits in this manner and then said, “What is the motivation for other eminent people to show miracles other than the desire for material objects? We (referring to himself) do not have such desires, so why show miracles?”

Despite possessing immense powers, he never placed importance on miracles.

તા. ૮/૧૧/૧૯૮૪ના રોજ દેવદિવાળીનો ઉત્સવ ઊજવી પ્રમુખસ્વામી મહારાજ પારાયણ નિમિત્તે ધર્મજ આવી પહોંચ્યા. અત્રે તા. ૧૦/૧૧ની બપોરે ભોજન બાદ થઈ રહેલા વચનામૃત વરતાલ ૧૬ના વાંચનમાંથી ચમત્કારોની વાત ફૂટી નીકળી. તે સંદર્ભમાં સ્વામીશ્રી બોલ્યા, “આપણી પાસે (ઐશ્વર્ય) છે નહીં એટલે શું દેખાડીએ? બીજા બધા ઐશ્વર્ય લઈને ફરે છે એટલે બતાવે છે. મહારાજ આપણને આપી નથી ગયા એટલે શું બતાવવું?”

મનુષ્યભાવનાં આટલાં વેણ ઉચ્ચરી સ્વામીશ્રીએ કહ્યું, “મોટાને પરચો દેખાડવાની પાછળ પદાર્થની લાલસા સિવાય બીજું શું છે? આપણને એ ઇચ્છા નથી, પછી શું પરચા દેખાડવા?”

અઢળક ઐશ્વર્યના ધણી હોવા છતાં સ્વામીશ્રીએ કદી પરચાની વાતોને અગ્રસ્થાન લેવા દીધું નહોતું. ‘ઉર મેં લેશ ન આશ...’ની તેઓની સ્થિતિ આવા પ્રસંગે વિશેષ પરખાતી.
